RV Travel with Horses: Enjoying Equestrian Adventures on the Road

As an equestrian enthusiast, there is nothing more exhilarating than exploring new trails and attending equestrian events. However, traveling with horses poses some unique challenges, like finding appropriate stabling and feeding for your horses. Whether you pull a horse trailer or travel in an equine motorcoach, the team at Rick's RV Center know the safety of your horses is your top concern.

When traveling with horses, safety is paramount. Ensure that you inspect your RV and trailer thoroughly before you start your trip. Check that all lug nuts, bolts, and screws are tightened, and that the tires are properly inflated. Ensure that all electrical connections are intact and in good working condition. Also, make sure that your horses are comfortable and correctly secured in their RV or trailer. It is crucial to keep your horses hydrated and feed them at the appropriate times.

Researching your route and planning your stops in advance is paramount to a smooth trip. With the growing demand on RV spaces for rent, having reservations is important. Especially when it comes to finding facilities that can accommodate both your family and horses. Some RV parks have horse-friendly spaces, including separate paddocks or stables. Besides overnight lodging, know where you can fill up on water and hay, and where you can take your horses for proper grooming and exercise. Local fairgrounds are also a good option to consider.

A few other tips:

  • Before embarking on a long trip, take your horses on smaller trips first to get them accustomed to traveling in an RV or trailer.

  • Invest in good quality trailering equipment, including break controllers, sway control systems, and tire monitors

  • Pack enough hay and feed for the duration of your trip, and make sure you have enough storage space for your supplies

  • Bring ample water for both you and your horses

  • Plan for frequent stops to allow your horses to stretch their legs and get some exercise.
